Layering Guide

How Layered Lengths Sit

When layering multiple necklaces, each length sits at a different point on the neck and chest — creating that effortless, graduated look. Here's how a typical four-piece stack falls.

01
14"–16"
Sits highest, closest to the neck — often a fine chain or collar-style piece.
02
16"–18"
Falls just below — typically where a herringbone or snake chain sits.
03
18"–20"
Drops to the upper chest — a great length for a pendant or link chain.
04
20"–24"
The longest layer, resting lowest — adds depth and movement to the stack.

The key to a good stack: keep each layer at least 2 inches apart from the next. Too close and the chains will tangle; too far apart and the stack loses its graduated effect.

A Simple 4-Piece Layering Formula

If you're building a stack from scratch, this is a reliable starting point.

Shortest 14"–16" — a delicate chain or choker-style piece, sits closest to the neck
Layer 2 16"–18" — a textured chain (herringbone, snake, or curb) for contrast
Layer 3 18"–20" — a pendant or link-style chain as the visual centerpiece
Longest 20"–24" — a fine, longer chain that completes the look and adds drop

Mixing chain textures — smooth vs. textured, fine vs. chunky — within the same metal tone creates the most natural-looking stack. It's what gives layered necklaces that effortless, "always meant to be worn together" feel.

Quick Tip

Not sure where to start? Begin with one piece you already love — usually your 18" go-to chain — then build around it: add something shorter to sit above it, and something longer to sit below. It's easier than planning all four lengths at once.
